Before and After

There is no denying this was a drafty old room when we first got the house, with holes between the glass and frame of the single glazed windows big enough to get your hand in. It was cold. So no wonder our first port of call, after bringing the windows up to modern standards, was to get some beautiful new rads. And we weren’t messing around on the size front. These beauties are big and powerful. They are Bisque’s unique modern take on a classic and we love how they give the room its architectural bones, rooted in the victorian period. We made the most too of Bisque’s colour match option and had them painted in Mylands ‘Rose Theatre’ to match the woodwork throughout the room (and whole house in fact). After the last freezing cold winter spent in the house we can’t wait for the cold nights to draw in now, to test them out properly.

The rads feel like they belong in the room. The classic style fits the house and the custom colour brings them bang up to date.
Hardware is important too, so we took our cue from the original door handles on some of the doors in the house. We found black rim lock door handles with Brass knobs to go on the door and matching for the adjoining bathroom. It’s a detail that adds luxury to the feel of the room.

This sideboard has been with us through every move we have made. It had a past life of old oak, then neon orange and now we have given it new life as added towel and bathroom storage, with this paint job in Farrow and Ball’s Vardo. The colour adds a much needed weight to the space and was inspired by the oil on canvas artwork of two spoilt girls with their pony above the fireplace (me, Jord and Buckley perhaps). Above this piece hangs another artwork that has been waiting for its moment since we met the artist, Christian Furr, a couple of years ago and purchased this limited addition piece named ‘Jouissance’ made from diamond dust. No really. It’s impact gives us a great wake up call every morning.
We had the curtains made from our new Forest Hill collection, designed in collaboration with Custhom. This is the ‘borage’ colourway in bespoke fade and we have run them from floor to ceiling across the whole wall. When we put them up we both literally jumped up and down with joy (design geeks that we are). They feel so special. The antique patinated mirror from Sofa.com makes the floral curtains feel like they continue forever and bounces the light around beautifully.

Adding more luxury, in a slightly more mad way, we applied gold leaf to our fireplace. Before, it was bare concrete and firebrick, but we wanted to create more of a decorative focal point. It was so easy to do, surprisingly inexpensive and we love the result, harking back to our theatrical roots, whilst adding texture. The perfect setting for ‘Paul the horse’ our badly broken, but still loved Royal Doulton figure.

Our Kink side tables by Sebastian Wrong (who we interviewed on our Design Crush series) for Established & Sons. If you’ve been following the process we bought these years ago and have been saving them, carefully boxed up, especially for this job. The fact that they are now out of production makes them feel all the more special and we love them, even the bell-like noise they make as you put your glass of water and phone down on them before you go to sleep. They also bring an unexpected injection of colour to the room that keeps it fresh and gives it some edge.
We have used hanging brass pendant lights (by Plumen from Tyson lighting) to keep the table surface free. They make the modest bed feel grand. Whilst the grey linen bedding from Piglet in Bed (great name) gives a textural layer that softens the look.

Keeping us safe each night is our pink Unicorn by the wonderful, Pansy Ass Ceramics. We found them on instagram and their cheeky pieces never fail to make us smile. The unicorn has become rather an important icon in our lives so we just had to have him in pride of place above our bed.
