How do you create a home design for the generation that supposedly has it all? Bombarded as we are with images and image-crafters all over social media showing you their stunning pads and an ever changing conveyor belt of the new must have chair or light, it is no wonder so many of us are feeling the FOMO.
With the media printing studies that suggest we are the unhappiest generation ever and our very own clients terrified on first meeting at the idea of making the wrong choice in their homes, we wanted to explore the cultural scene behind what makes a great home for a Unicorn.
The term unicorn has been used to describe our generation. If our grandparents were the work horses who rebuilt the country, and our parents were the free ponies with green pastures, then we are the Unicorns with the flowers in our pasture and the world at our feet. We are expected to fly, to have it all, to be mythical, special creatures. And is this pressure of expectation proving too much? For many of our clients, and indeed creative friends, it would seem so.
At the start of this year we commented that in Paris there was a battle between Interstellar style and Nature, is this the pull that creates our extreme confusion in pinning down our style?
The secret for us is to look into yourself. Your home should give you what you need. A place that strengthens you. Strengthens your sense of self. Part of your mythology.
If we are each our parents little superheroes, what is our origin story? And do our homes reflect that?
Is this why superhero movies have become such a phenomenon? Are we seeing ourselves as superheroes, with the weight of the world on our shoulders. Every Batman needs his cave to retreat to just as every Catwoman needs her lair, a place that is carved just for them with an ambience and function that suits their needs so that they can face the fight on the outside.
So how does this all translate into interiors? Dressing rooms, entertainment space, artistic statement, uniqueness. Simplicity too is its own retreat just as nature is its own escape. Whatever makes you tick.
High concept spaces, creative spaces, small spaces, non spaces. Anything to make an impact, anything to empower you. And if all else fails, remember that you are a unicorn, so why should you give a shit what anyone else thinks, your home is for you.
